According
to the ancient sources, the promontory of Licosa takes his name by the mermaid Leucosia. In
reality it seems that there were two mermaids: Leucosia and Leukotea. In fact,
Omero tells exactly about the promontory of "the two mermaids",
regarding to the journey of Ulisse. This legend has to be enough to justify the
particolar fascination that characterises this place.
Moreover, the splendid pinewood that appears along the sea and the numerous
coves that seems to carve into the rocky coast, makes the trip very interesting
and pleasant. Like a
real terrace the promontory of Licosa stretches out on the sea with his mediterranean
spot, his ruins, his proves of the constant human presence dating from the Greek
and Roman age untill now.
Finally, the spectacular aquariums of the Museum of the Sea of Pioppi allow the
visitors to have a look at the submergeed world and at the sea life on different
dephts.

When
the last dinosours disappeared, on the bottom of the sea began to diposit the
first sediments that gave the origins to the rocks that create today the reef of
Telegrafo Point, about 65 million yaers ago. The Cilento was born.
From the sea came also the Focei who settled them near a source and consecrated the nymph Yele, from there the name of the ancient and renowned city
Elea.
The southern quarter with the rest of the harbor, the sacred sink, the roman
thermal baths and, more above, the amphitheater, the paleochristian church, the
angioina tower and the Porta Rosa travel over again all the splendid centuries.
